People want a satisfying career that comes with an attractive paycheck. It is typically not as commonplace to find a job that, while being satisfying and fulfilling, also helps the environment. Such a job would have a very high feel-good factor. If you want such a job that is good and satisfying and helps the earth, and the mankind as a whole, the best options might be in the alternative energy field.

This industry is growing quickly as many governments are actively backing it. Investors have a growing interest in this field too, as they can see that alternative energy is the future of the world. As oil and other fossil fuels continue to become more expensive, alternative energy becomes more attractive, and we move towards a future where alternative energy will be the chief source of energy. As investors' interest grows in this area, they are more willing to invest. This money then becomes available to the energy companies and helps them grow. This creates more jobs in the industry.

A variety of new career options will become available in the field of alternative energy. Renewable energy and climate change are upcoming areas and will need skilled workers.  Some job profiles these will cover will be design, manufacturing, installation, servicing, and marketing of alternative energy technologies. There would be jobs like those of mechanics, plant operators, scientists and engineers. Second tier companies supplying alternative energy companies with equipment, raw materials, professional services and transportation will also see a rise in new jobs.

It is predicted that the number of Green Collar jobs (ranging from technical to scientific, manufacturing and installation labor jobs) could reach 40 million in less than 25 years. By 2030, they are expected to reach 20% of US work force. Alternative energy jobs are close to $1 trillion in revenues and provide 8.5 million jobs. Their salaries range from the blue-collar to white-collar jobs.

United States government is promoting new jobs in the alternative energy field. The  government is offering incentives to alternative energy companies. These will give rise to new jobs in the field. Alternative energy related jobs will see a rise in military as well.

The President has pointed out that to be able to progress in field of alternative fuels in the country, we will need to research and develop advanced technologies that can use biomass from plant fibers to make ethanol. This biomass is currently thrown away as waste material. President's Federal Budget from last year had set aside $150 million to help with developing biofuels. These biofuels will be extracted from bio waste products like switch grass, wood chips, and corn stalks.

This was an increase of $59 million from the Federal Budget of year 2006. Scientists and researchers who are working with cellulose-based ethanol can also bring out cost-effective alternatives by year 2012. This could replace as much as 30 percent of the country's present fuel consumption. President's plan also takes into account focusing on research and development in area of hybrid vehicles.

These will be using battery technology. Focus will also be put on hybrid vehicles which run on gas or electricity, based on the calculation performed by a computer in the vehicle. In these cars, city driving would take up negligible gas in a week's time as compared to traditionally powered vehicles.
