Harnessing Alternative Energy - Why Is Renewable Sources A Good Alternative Fuel

Don't pay for your electricity any longer... |
Alternative energy refers to energy that is not generated by burning fossil fuels. The global climate change and the rising fuel process are bringing about a fresh interest in alternative energy. There are many forms of energy that have have little effect on the environment and have considerable supplies available to harness and use.
We have depended on fossil fuels for about 200 years now, and its difficult to think of a time when we might not be as heavily dependent on them as we are today, of an infrastructure that might be very different from the energy infrastructure we use worldwide today. But this time is not too far ahead in the future when our dependence on fossil fuels will have to dramatically come down, either voluntarily or involuntarily, and alternative fuels will take their place. In this world we will still have access to the energy for our daily domestic and commercial needs, however, the nature in which it will be developed and used will differ. This energy will hopefully be cheaper and easier to use than the traditional energy sources.
Alternative energy will be less damaging to our environment, contributing to far less air pollution than the fossil fuels. We can research new ways of generating electricity such that they are less disruptive to the environment and the varied forms of life on earth. While it would certainly help if the alternative energy technologies are cost-effective, they also need to be consistent and reliable sources of energy.
There are a number of different forms of alternative energy: solar power, wind power, hydro power and geothermal energy are a few such examples.
Solar energy is generated by photovoltaic cells. With progress in technology, these are becoming less expensive. Solar energy can be used to heat water and generate electricity. It does not give out any pollution. Work to make it more cost-effective is progressing.
Wind energy is already less expensive to generate electricity from than natural gas, and is competing in prices with coal. It is the alternative energy which has generated the most interest and the largest investments from governments and private investors alike. Wind farms are being constructed in windy areas, to capture the wind motion and convert the mechanical energy to electrical. The only caveat is the days when there is not much wind. This makes it a slightly unreliable resource.
Another source of alternative energy is hydroelectric energy. This source can generate significant power. It uses water's motion triggered by gravitational forces to produce electrical energy. This energy can however be expensive to produce. Building dams to control the water flow can produce the energy, but have damaging effect on the neighboring ecology. Building and operating these dams is complex. When targeting a small amount of energy production, dams are not needed and small appliances will suffice which will be lot easier to install and manage.
Geothermal energy is produced by the heating waters just below the surface of earth. Different methods are used to get this hot water: like flash, binary and dry steam power plants.
